Carbon footprint reduction for the European Parliament

The Context
In 2008, the European Parliament published a call for tenders for the assessment of the EP’s carbon footprints for 2006 and for the elaboration of emission reduction solutions. This call was won and the contract fulfilled by Futureproofed and Deloitte.

The Challenge
How to successfully reduce your footprint – favourably by measures of energy efficiency as they guarantee permanent, immediate and higher environmental and financial returns.

The Trajectory

  • The start. Deloitte calculated the carbon footprint (scope 1, 2, 3), Futureproofed calculated and formulated reduction opportunities in a reduction plan.

  • The system. Futureproofed developed a Whole System Design to show all relations between energy subsystems and to point out the effect of single measures on the entire system.

  • The sequence. We paid attention to the right sequence of the proposed measures in order to gain a maximal beneficiary effect.

  • The vision. Futureproofed also raised awareness through internal communication.

Results en Resolutions
Futureproofed pointed out that a reduction of over 30% is possible, saving money along the way. Based on our recommendations, the European Parliament approved an action plan to reduce the GHG emissions by 30% by 2020. In 2012 the target has already been reached by 50%.
