The Belgian city of Leuven, one of the first European university cities, wants to become climate neutral by 2030. After winning a tender and calculating the city’s carbon footprint, Futureproofed will now guide Leuven towards their goal: becoming an exemplary resilient and sustainable city. Great progress has already been made with the foundation of the non-profit organisation 'Leuven Klimaatneutraal 2030'. The non-profit organisation groups all stakeholders (over 200 within 1 year after start-up) and guides the transition to a carbon-neutral city starting from the benchmark measurement of 2010 made by Futureproofed.
Leuven Klimaatneutraal 2030 vzw has the task to organise and monitor this quest for a climate neutral city. To do so we both need to inform, sensibilise, inspire, facilitate, assemble all measures taken by all the partners and monitor the progress of the total emissions. Futureproofed was asked to provide the right tool to not only follow up the emissions, but also to inspire more people to engage in this crucial process.
The first 20+ partners engaged themselves to make a climate actionplan with specific actions to reduce their own carbon emissions both on short as on long term. Futureproofed built an online tool where the partners can individually insert their actions. Mapping the emissions was done by collection energy data from different sources (VEA, Eandis, VMM,...) on the different areas of scope 1&2 (electricity, gas, gasoline, road transport,...). More than 90% of the resulting data is from primary sources while the rest is estimated and corrected for several factors.
All this data was collected in a large monitoringtool which converted them into CO2 equivalent emissions. The separate data weren’t useful as such, but by collecting and converting them, Futureproofed turned them into useful and valuable information. The results were further analysed, grouped and assigned KPI's. This way the data became a strategic managing tool to do an almost real-time follow-up of the evolution of the whole city on its carbon-neutral trajectory.
A large part of these actions lie with the citizens of Leuven who have to be engaged in the process. By visualising the results of the partners and the city, it is possible to interact with the citizens on this topic. By making the data intelligent and visually attractive, marketing and communication towards the public will be greatly improved. That way the data also will become a strategic communication tool.
Results and Resolutions
The dashboard is still in a preliminary phase and will be launched in the first half of 2015. We keep you posted on further updates.
