Over the past 20 years the Group Machiels has been the market leader in Limburg (Belgium) for the final processing of waste. Group Machiels has the ambition to continue and expand this pioneering role by valorising waste materials from a position at the forefront of the search for techniques to achieve this mission. And this both in Belgium and at international level.

Group Machiels is now investigating a enhanced landfill mining project. The purpose of enhanced landfill mining is to recycle materials and recover energy from the landfill, while gradually restoring, over a period of 20 years, the original natural surroundings.
In January 2009, Machiels commissioned Futureproofed to calculate the greenhouse gas emissions of such an enhanced landfill mining approach to the Remo site.
