Federation of Enterprises in Belgium makes the case for energy efficiency

On April 22, 2009, no less than 1100 Belgian business leaders, international experts, policy makers and NGOs attended the plenary sessions and workshops of the the Federation of Enterprises in Belgium (FEB). The objective of this forum was to make from Belgium one of the most energy-efficient economies in the world by 2030. Futureproofed's managing director, Serge de Gheldere, contributed to the plenary sessions in a video message, and as a presenter / moderator of the workshop on energy efficiency.

In the plenary sessions, McKinsey & Company presented a new new study that identifies the huge untapped potential in Belgium for energy efficiency, the lowest-cost means of reducing Belgium’s GHG emissions, more powerful even than shifting to low-carbon energy. In addition, it involves us all: improving the country’s energy efficiency requires an effort from everyone across society – individuals, private sector, public sector and NGOs.

Top speakers such as FEB Chairman Thomas Leysen, federal environment minister Paul Magnette, added to this making the case for improving energy efficiency in Belgium, and showing the huge opportunity this represents for business and society.

In addition to the plenary session one can could choose from five workshops in which experts discussed about possible energy savings in construction, transport, industrial processes, consumer goods and finance. You heard testimony from Belgian companies and national and international experts on questions like: What options we have to switch to a more energy-efficient economy? How can we achieve it, and at what price?
